Wedding Business Solutions Podcast with Alan Berg CSP - It's not the new normal, it's the next normalIt’s not the “new normal”, it’s the “next normal”

In my over 25 years in and around the wedding and event industry I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs. We’ve survived economic downturns, the 9/11 tragedy, the housing crash and now the pandemic. Some of you have been around for all of these, and some of you got in later. Every time there’s a downturn there’s talk about the “new normal.” The thing is that it’s not just a new normal it’s the next normal. Listen to this 11-minute episode and see what I mean and how you can use this to gain a new perspective.

– Are we into the new normal now, or is it just the next normal? Listen to this episode and find out. You know a lot of people talk about the new normal. We go through some sort of trial and tribulation in our life personally or as a collective group as we did here certainly with the pandemic, and people are talking about it’s the new normal, it’s the new normal. I like to think of it as the next normal. I’ve been in the wedding and event industry for over 25 years, and we’ve been through a lot of different changes. We’ve been through ups and downs in the economy, we’ve been through housing crisis, we’ve been through the 911 tragedy, we’ve now been through the pandemic, and there’s been countless hurricanes, and tornadoes, and all kinds of things that go through, and people end up on the other side of that, and they very often talk about the new normal. Well, it’s going to be the next normal because things are going to change again.

You have to think about, you know, I can’t go back to the way it was, and the reason we can’t go back to the way it was is because it never does. I saw a great quote today from Seth Godin, G-O-D-I-N, if you’re not familiar with him he’s a great marketing expert. I’ve read his books, and I get his email every day with his blog. And he talked about how history doesn’t necessarily repeat itself but it does rhyme a lot. And I love that thought where it may not do what it did but it might look similar, and that’s where we talk about this new normal, and I talk about the next normal. You have to think in your life personally, in your life professionally, you’re going to run across challenges, you’re going to come across opportunities that didn’t present themselves before, and now you have this chance to take an opportunity, and to do something about it. You can decide to move forward with it, you can decide to ignore it, it’s your choice. And that’s the thing is you decide what your next normal is.

One of the things that came out of the pandemic what I saw with people is reevaluating what they’re selling, how they’re selling, offering things they never offered before because they never thought to offer them. It’s the same thing with me. I offer group website reviews, and group masterclasses virtually, I never did that before. I did in-person sessions, I did private consulting which I still do, private sales training which I still do but I didn’t do these group sessions ’cause I never thought I had to. I actually didn’t have the time to do it I was out on the road doing stuff. So how much of this am I going to bring forward with me to my next normal, and what is your next normal look like?

If you’re not feeling a little uncomfortable you’re just doing things that you’ve always done. I like to think about trying to make myself uncomfortable. I actually talk about how do I make my business obsolete before somebody does it for me? By coming up with products and services, coming up with ideas that I didn’t have before, and not following what other people are doing, rather being the leader and going in my own path. I had somebody the other day reached out about having me secret shop their competitors to get pricing, and I said, okay, you know, I can give you a price for that certainly, how many are you looking to do? And it was an entertainment company and he said 20. I said, 20, why do you need to know, or really why do you care about the prices of 20 other companies? They can’t all be your most direct competitors. And then realistically who cares, who cares, If they want you, and if they want your results they have to pay your price.

So what you need to be focusing on is why should they hire you? Why do people choose you specifically? And what can you do in your next normal to show them that they need to hire you? Or how can you make yourself different? What services, what products can you do, what new twists can you come up with that makes sense for you? Actually and they make sense for your customers as well. So with a lot of my customers these days were re-evaluating their prices, their products, their services, whether they’re selling via a la carte, or packages, actually one of my most popular podcasts so far was on a la carte versus packages, you know which is better for you. I’m working with a lot of people, and we’re talking about how do we make packages when they don’t have them, or how do we make their packages better, and easier, and simpler? Simplify, not that what you do is going to be simple but it’s easier for people to buy because you’re presenting in a way that’s much more simple. And again this is a next normal.

We’re in a world where people don’t have a lot of attention span, we already know that that’s why I’m keeping these episodes to 10 or 15 minutes or less. We don’t have a lot of attention span, and when trying to compare you versus somebody else you don’t want to look exactly like them but on the other side if you look so different you might lose people because they don’t understand what makes you different. So there is that again what’s your next normal there? How do I present to people that what I do is different and unique but yet it’s still what they need and want. One of the hardest things for people to do is when they have a product that didn’t exist before because nobody’s looking for it. If they don’t even know it exists then they’re not even looking for it. Very few companies are succeeding that way the way that Apple has. Steve Jobs again he came up with products that we didn’t know we needed, and then we found we couldn’t live without, says a guy who’s got an iPhone 11 Pro here with three cameras on it, and my apple watch here, and I’m recording this on an apple computer, right? So I didn’t know I needed an iPad, a matter of fact I remember when they came out I was like, oh, who needs one of those? I think I’m on my what is it? Fourth or fifth one that I’ve ever had, and same thing with the phones.

You know we used to use these things to I don’t know, crazy, like make telephone calls, and then all of a sudden there was texting which if you remember the early days was pushed this key two times to get you know to a letter B, and push this key three times to get to a letter L, The new normal or the next normal was then we went to full keyboards on our phones, and those had had real buttons, and there was a whole keyboard on there. And then they figured out how to put that onto the screen, and the touch screen, and now you can open your phone just by looking at it, These are all next normals, The new normal is just wherever you are today. The next normal is guaranteed it’s going to be something different, and it’s up to you to decide where do you want to go with that? If you’re in the wedding industry your customers next month don’t know what you offer until they go looking, so you can change what you do.

You have the curse of knowledge of the history of what you used to do, of the way things used to be I hear from people all the time, I want them to go back the way they used to be. They’re not going to, we can only move forward, we only move forward from where we are to the next thing, and that’s why I call it the next normal, what is your next normal? It’s being able to do things you didn’t do before, being able to do things for customers you didn’t be able, or couldn’t do before. Being able to profit in a way you weren’t able to before because maybe you had too many offerings, too many products, too many different choices for people which made it harder for them which made it harder for you to sell as well.

A masterclass follow-up I did yesterday one of the people came in, and she had all of these different packages, and when we looked at what they were they were basically just three packages. The only difference was the number of people on each of those, you know, how much your paying based on the number of people. I said so why don’t you just present that as three, and then based upon the number of guests this is what it costs. And she’s like, oh, that’s so much easier, right? Her next normal is making it easier for her to sell by making it easier for her customers to understand what she offers, and easier for them to figure out how much it’s going to cost and easier for them to buy. She actually also has a venue put together a package which included I think she said everything except what you’re going to wear. And she said, people are loving it. They’re loving the idea of making one choice, and they’re getting not only the venue, not only the caterer but the music, the photography, the video, the flowers, right, got invitations going down the list, and she’s working with local pros who when she brought the idea to them like, wow, this is crazy, this is a great idea, they love to work with her on it, and that’s her next normal.

So what is your next normal? What’s the next thing you’re working on, and then you’re going to take action on it because that’s really the key. Our next normal is about taking action, and doing things that we weren’t doing before, that’s our next normal. Going back to the way they were they’re never going to do that. And again, like Seth Godin said they might look similar, they might rhyme as he calls it to what it looked like before but they don’t. Like when the stock market dropped in 2020 significantly those people that sold at the bottom that was a problem.

Those of us that held on it came back up, and actually went up from there so at the point that it went back up to where it dropped from it looked similar but it wasn’t, it wasn’t. If you’re looking at a stock index, and say, okay, the Nasdaq is here, or the S&P is here, if you looked into the individual stocks you’ll find out that some went up more, some went down more but they evened out to that, to the next normal. House prices when housing prices crashed, and then they went back up again at one point they looked like they did before but it was just the next normal again. So what can you do to help you sell more, profit more, and help more people have amazing weddings when it’s your next normal? Come up with some ideas, share them with me I’d love to hear about them. Thanks for tuning in.
