Given the recent news in the world of same-sex marriage I thought it was finally time to finish my friend Bernadette Covney Smith’s book “The Business of Gay Weddings“. Have you ever wished you had done something sooner? That’s how I felt when I read the final chapter.

Some of you may have read my review of Kathryn Hamm and Thea Dodd’s book “The Art of Capturing Love. Before reading that book I had thought that I was somewhat knowledgeable about the subject, but boy was I wrong. Now, after reading Bernadette’s book I can honestly say that I’ve learned so much, in a short time.

A fast and important read

As with so many other subjects there are nuances and details that are often not visible right away. Page by page, chapter by chapter, Bernadette winds us through this maze. I love the conversational style in which she writes. As I know her personally, I felt as if I was really “hear” her teaching me. The pages fly by as you’re guided through the subject. She poses compelling questions without making assumptions about your level of competence. There’s truly something for everyone in this book.

Listen to your language

Ever since Massachusetts took the lead on same-sex marriage I’ve been evaluating my personal language when I refer to marriage and weddings. I want to be inclusive, without sounding like I’m trying too hard. I want to be respectful of the people involved, as they’re my friends, neighbors and relatives, and the subject. Have you really “listened” to your language lately? Have you read over the words on your website, in your brochures and in your contracts and forms? No doubt there are legacy issues and it’ll take some time to find them all.

Open, friendly or competent?

There’s a difference between being open to anyone and really trying to understand how to be inclusive. Sometimes it’s subtle, as with saying brides and grooms (plural, rather than singular). Sometimes it takes a little more thought, as with what to say on your contract in place of bride and groom. Are you prepared to navigate this landscape? Read this book and you’ll be better prepared. Better yet, check out her training programs and consulting services. Whether you do better reading, hearing, or having a sherpa, The Business of Gay Weddings will give you a foundation on which to build your competency in the wonderful world of same-sex marriage. Enjoy!

Full disclosure: I had my signed copy sitting for far too long before opening it. I have done some personal consulting for Bernadette for her business and brand. Also, my son, Ian Berg, is a graphic designer who did the cover and interior book layout. Bernadette did not ask me to read, or write a review of her book. My only regret is not having read it sooner.
