– Are you too busy to work on your business? Listen to this episode and find out. Hi, it’s Alan Berg. Welcome back to another edition of the Wedding Business Solutions Podcast. I’m doing this episode because I see a lot of people right now are very, very busy with the backlog of weddings and events that have been happening. The postponements, the reschedulings, all the different things that have happened to cause a lot of people to be really busy right now. And the thing is when you’re busy it’s easy to take your eye off the ball. It’s easier to take your eye off the future and work in the moment because you have to, you have to work in what’s happening right now.

You have to do these weddings and events. Some of you are having some staffing issues with that. Some of you are just getting tired from doing many, many more events than you might have normally done in a year or at this time of the year. And the thing is your future business depends upon what you do now. And that’s always been the case. It always will be the case. These last few years have been a little wonky in terms of business that you wrote in 2020 that you might be doing in 2022 or 2021 that you’re doing later or even into next year. But the key is the future. And I’ve been talking about this for a while. We’re going to go back to something that feels more like a normal year. Something that feels more like a 2018 or a 2019 at some point. Some people are seeing fewer inquiries coming in but that actually might be the right number of inquiries because it’s just not the craziness that we’ve been having.

The key though is you have to take some time while you’re working IN your business to work ON your business. I’ve talked about this. I’ve written about this in one of my books called “Your Attitude for Success” where I talk about your “Today list” and your “To-Do list”. And your today list is all the things you have to do today. So you have to answer your emails and your messages and you have to get ready for the weddings and events that you have coming up this coming weekend and the one after and after that. You have to if you’re a caterer, you have to be ordering food and prepping and doing all these things. If you’re a florist, you’re ordering flowers you’re anticipating these things. That’s your today list. But your To-Do list is these things that you want to get done or that you need to do for the future. So you need to be marketing and advertising. You need to be networking. You need to be doing education events and improving your skills. As I always say, make your current business obsolete before someone does it for you. So what’s your next idea? If you’re not moving forward you’re really standing still because, or maybe even going backwards because what’s happening right now, this is history.

The business you’re doing now is history. You need to be working ON your business. So what are the things that you need to improve in your business or in your skills? What are those skills that you need to work on yourself? That’s working ON your business. Do you need to be better at sales? Do you need to be better at marketing? Do you need to be better at a particular technical skill in your business? Do you need to catch up with what’s going on because you haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on in your particular skill or industry because you’ve been too busy working IN your business? The key is that all of us need to take some time to work ON our business, otherwise our businesses are going backwards and somebody else is working on their business and they’re moving forward. And then you just are getting further and further behind.

So it’s easy to say, yeah, I’ll get to that. I’ll get to that. But then you don’t, you need to make a priority whether that’s going to a conference. I mean, it’s things that I do. I go to conferences about speaking and training no matter how good I am, I know I can be better. And that’s the thing is we can all be better. And you are every time you do another event you get better, but you also have to get better at the other things in your business. You have to get better at the advertising, the marketing, the business skills. I just recorded an episode which will be coming out, I think a little bit after this on emotional intelligence because retaining employees and having your customers or your potential customers even trust you more so they want to do business with you is dependent upon your emotional intelligence. So these are the things that we need to be working ON so that we can do more of the business that we want to do.

I just wanted to drop in and say, hey, take some time to work ON your business. Don’t just be working IN it. Because busy is easy, but success in the long run is dependent upon you taking time to work ON your business, work ON your skills, work ON your personal stuff because this’ll help your personal life as well as your business life. So take a few minutes or maybe longer and do that.

I’m Alan Berg. Thanks for listening. If you have any questions about this or if you’d like to suggest other topics for “The Wedding Business Solutions Podcast” please let me know. My email is [email protected]. Look forward to seeing you on the next episode. Thanks.
