Are your results actually better, or just different - Alan Berg CSP Wedding Business Solutions Podcast - Alan Berg CSP Wedding Business Solutions PodcastAre your results actually better, or just different?

I got to thinking about all of the people who tell me that they provide better results than their competitors. How do they know? It’s not like we get to see the results, side by side. So, in this shorter than my usual short musings I give my perspective on this topic.

Listen to this new 4-minute episode for some food for thought on whether you are actually providing better results, or if they’re just different.

– Are your results better, or are they just different? Listen to this episode and find out. Very often when I’m speaking to wedding and event pros like you, I ask you what makes you different than your competitors. And very often you want to tell me that it’s because you provide better results. Well, how do we know that? How do we know? We don’t live in the movies where in a parallel universe, you can do someone’s wedding or event, and they could have another exact wedding or event done with somebody else. Whether it’s at a different venue, with a different caterer with a different photographer, videographer, band, DJ, planner, invitations, flowers, go down the line. Whatever it is there, they could do exactly the same thing, and the only thing that was different was what you did. See, we’ll never be able to do that. It’s not like walking into the electronic store and seeing two televisions side by side and you can compare, oh, I like the picture on this better than that one. We’re never going to be able to see that in real life.

So, are your results better, or are they just different? And is it okay that they’re different as long as what makes them different is what people want to get by hiring you? To me, that’s the key. What you need to be doing is talking about the results that you can provide. You can’t really say they’re better than somebody else. They’re different for sure. But what makes them better is in the eye of the beholder. Is in the eye of the person that hires you. So when you’re selling someone on what makes you different, I often go back to the same thing. Look at your reviews. I did that today. I had a couple of consultations today with wedding and event pros. And one of the things we do is we look at your reviews to find your brand. Now you can listen to another episode I did with Kaylee Wees, and we talk about brand versus branding. I had another solo episode, I talked about brand versus branding. It’s a very popular topic for me to go out and speak about, brand versus branding. Your brand is what they say about you. And I was, the second one I had today was with a celebrant, an officiant. And the most wonderful things people were saying about him, and I’m sure they’re saying wonderful things about other celebrants and officiants in his market. But they’re not saying the same thing. They’re talking about the results that they got by choosing that person. Now those people are not going to get married again on that day by somebody else. So we can’t say that he did a better job. We can say that he did the job that only he could do because his results are only available if you actually choose him to provide those results.

So when you’re talking to people about what makes you different, don’t use better. What makes me different is this is what I can do for you. And if this is important to you, then you should choose me to do that. Whether or not you’re the venue, the caterer, the photographer, the videographer, the band, the DJ, the dress shop, the men’s formal wear. Whatever it is that you do, you’re going to do it as well as you can. And if they want your results, they don’t have to be better. They just have to be your result and you have to express what makes you different than anybody else. So food for thought here. Are your results actually better? Or are they just different? And does it matter if they’re better? Or does it matter if they perceive what makes you different? And they want you to provide the results because of that. Hope it gave you something to think about.
